MONTEREY, Calif. - Jeff Altenburg took the checkered flag in his new MAZDA6 racecar at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Sunday to give Mazda its first SCCA SPEED World Challenge Touring Car victory in the final round of the season. The victory was the first win for the new MAZDA6 racecar prepared by Tri-Point engineering.
Altenburg piloted his number 72 MAZDA6 flawlessly around the slick track and through a pack of Acura TSXs, RSXs, BMW 3-series and Audi A4s, before holding off Peter Cunningham by a 1.287-second margin. The MAZDA6 led the remaining six laps of the race after zooming past three-time series champion Pierre Kleinubing in turn 11. Altenburg set a new fast-lap record with a time of 1:39.446 (81.016 mph) - breaking the record he set last year by more than five seconds. MAZDA6 team driver Shauna Marinus finished the race in thirteenth place.
The top podium spot marked Altenburg's second career SPEED Touring Car win at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, as he took the checkered flag for Mazda at this same venue last year.
