MAZDA STATEMENT ON SAFETY RECALL OF CERTAIN 2014 MAZDA3 AND 2014-15 MAZDA6 WITH I-ELOOP
IRVINE, Calif. (April 24, 2014) – Mazda Statement:
“Mazda is recalling certain 2014 Mazda3 and 2014-15 Mazda6 vehicles which feature its capacitor-based regenerative engine braking system (i-ELOOP). This recall involves 5,698 vehicles in the United States (88,870 globally).
The Power Control Module (PCM) of affected vehicles may incorrectly determine that there is a failure of the system’s energy storage capacitor when the vehicle is operated during heavy rain or through deep puddles. This may cause the charging system to stop operating, resulting in a “Charging system warning light” to illuminate and “Charging system malfunction” message to display. Should the vehicle continue to operate under this condition, the battery will slowly be drained, eventually resulting in illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) and poor acceleration. Continued operation in this condition may result in loss of steering assist, windshield wiper operation and eventual engine stall due to the lack of electrical energy for the spark plugs and PCM.
This software-specific issue applies to 2014 Mazda3 vehicles produced from June 12, 2013 through December 18, 2013, and 2014-15 Mazda6 vehicles produced from May 20, 2013 through December 4, 2013. An updated control program has been implemented in production models built after that time. There is no defect in the i-ELOOP system components, such as the capacitor or DC/DC converter. Vehicles identified in the recall campaign will have their PCMs reprogrammed with updated software. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified in May 2014.”
There have been no reported accidents or injuries associated with this issue.
